Wow, it’s been so long since last I posted that I feel I should almost leave the blog as it is for history’s sake. What? That didn’t even make sense… moving on:
Facebook has a feature called Pulse that shows member trends and top 10 favorites of things. In case you aren’t familiar, Facebook is a networking website that–provided it is made available to your university–members can subscribe to and post profiles of themselves for others to see. Also, it’s an advertiser’s dreamboat. That’s because people, myself included, feel compelled to include every meaningless detail of their lives in an online profile. Sheesh, talk about targeted marketing.
Anyway, Pulse let me know that both at Belmont and at all colleges on the Facebook network, Catcher in the Rye, The Great Gatsby, and To Kill a Mockingbird are all in the top 10 member favorite books. Really? I’m not knocking those books in particular, but could it be that my generation merely lists any book they can remember being forced to read in grade school as a favorite for lack of having read anything else without a glossy cover that promises to get rid of that flab before spring break? Are there really 140 people whose favorite story involves a boy on the lookout for phonies?

Count me out of that 140. I have, do, and will always hated those books. In fact, the very nature of being forced to read something for school nearly guaranteed that I would hate it, or at the very least, resent it.
